During the top of the 3rd inning pitching coach Rick Peterson spoke to Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez:
.....regarding Maine's struggles he mentioned the high amount of foul balls (19 through 2 innings) maine has gotten which is causing his pitch count to rise and he struggles mentally at times, out of frustration. Umm, 19 foul balls in the first 2 innings is an obsurd amount. most pitchers don't get that through 6. this is the longest season of Maine's career and he needs to learn to lay off of himself a little bit and give him self a break mentally. Peterson is thrilled with his performance thus far this year but it's a long haul and will take some adjustments. hopefully they can get a little lead and give him a rest come sept.
.... regarding Sosa's shift to the bullpen - he mentioned how well he pitches out of the stretch and changes tempo very well. the other major factor is his style of pitching, which is not condusive to turning over a lineup 3 or 4 times but facing them the first time through, especially against a right handed dominant lineup.. Hi Rick, it's Fink. Have we met? I mean really, we've been calling for this guy to move to the pen for what seems like forever and now you see why.
... this just in. Mota still sux it big time. another inning and another run. seriously, sosa has filled in but now who will be the guy to replace Mota, and eventually Shoe-in-face. they are both haning on by a thread.
... Delgado was removed in the 8th inning with a leg contusion which he supposedly suffered the night before. Green moved to first and Thrilledge came in to play RF. the injury does not seem serious. Delgado was 2-4 with 1rbi and run scored.
