Wagner's Heir Apparent: Eddie Kunz

I was flipping back and forth last night between the Colts/Bears preseason game (Rex, are you trying to set an NFL record for fumbled snaps this year?) and well, not much else. When i came across the last half inning of the Brooklyn Cyclones/Staten Island Yankees game. It was 1-0 Brooklyn in the top of the 9th and they were trying to close out the victory.

Normally, I take a glimpse at these games for about 2 seconds unless something cathes my eye. Well, last night pitcher Eddie Kunz did just that. I saw this kid throwing mid to high 90's fastballs with movement that would make The Jacket giddy. You could see right away that there was a reason the Mets drafted him in the 1st round this year and will expect big things from in the not so distant future.

Kunz was taken in the 1st round by the Mets with the 42nd pick and was the closer for College World Series champions Oregon St. With a little work on his location and secondary pitches we could see Kunz skyrocket through the system, similar to Joe Smith. He's only thown a few games this summer but don't be surprised to see him start out at AA Binghamton next year with an eye on the big club come mid summer.
